Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a partner to join the classes?
No! Tango is a social dance, and we encourage people to show up, dance with each other, and make new friends. We ask dancers to rotate during the class so you can learn from dancing with different people.
Update: Most people come to our classes without a partner, and we always get roughly the same number of leaders and followers!
What should I wear for the classes?
Anything comfortable to move around in. Soft shoes are preferred so your feet can move freely.
Are there gender roles in tango?
There are defined roles in tango (leader and follower) but they need not be gendered. You can dance whichever role you wish. Historically men practised with each other before going out to dance socially.
I'm not a university student. Can I join the society?
Absolutely! Our student membership is open to all students, and we also have a membership for non-students. We have had members from other universities, as well as university staff, researchers, and community members from Oxford city.
What is a practica, and while I'm at it, what is a milonga?
A practica is a tango practice session. It is quite informal and sociable. Stick around after the class to socialise and practice what you've learned!
A milonga is a formal tango social, where specific etiquette is observed. We will cover the milonga etiquette during our classes, so you can venture out to any milonga in any city in the world!
